Canadian Pacific Caboose - P06443

Canadian Pacific Caboose

The Canadian Pacific Caboose was built in 1944 for CP Rail. A house moving company carried it down the Bypass from the tracks near the Haney Wharf up to its present location. The outside of the caboose is clad in wood; it was originally tongue in groove boards, but those were replaced by plywood in the 1960's. The original style of board finish was restored in 2006 and the caboose was painted in the original colours.

There are two main sections inside, the observation/storage area and the kitchen/sleeping area. The upper observation seats were used by the man in the caboose to observe the state of the train, particularly to watch ahead and behind for signs of fire, and to watch beside and behind for things falling off.

Like the diorama, obtaining and installing the caboose and its ongoing upkeep reflect the work of the Dewdney-Alouette Railway Society.
