First Nations Displays
For the native cultures of this area, basketry was very important and took the place of metal, ceramic, and other containers. One round basket in our display dates to the 1920's. We also have a picture of a very similar, though flattened basket that was recovered from the clay mud at the mouth of Kanaka Creek that is radiocarbon dated at over 4000 years old. This item is currently at the Royal B.C. Museum in Victoria. While we don't have a watertight basket on display, they do exist and the natives cooked inside such baskets by placing heated rocks in the water.
The items on display, for the most part, were found within Maple Ridge and probably reflect the activities of the ancestors of the Katzie people who now have their main reserve in Pitt Meadows.
