Selkirk wedding dress

Front Room Displays

The front room demonstrates differences through the ages in regards to clothing and personal effects.

Lack of fresh produce and protein resulted in slower growth, and vintage clothing shows that people were much smaller. The Selkirk wedding dress on display is a great example of this. The dress was considered so valuable a piece of apparel that it was worn by all three sisters in the family. This was in part due to the time it took to construct such a garment. This also indicates that all three girls were the same size. While the main part of the dress was the same, Ruby Selkirk had a kind of tulle over-dress and the third sister added lace appliqués — each wanting a special look for her wedding day.

In the two pictures beside the dress, Ruby Selkirk can be seen marrying Nelson Lougheed of Abernethy & Lougheed Logging Company who was later Minister of Public Works in a provincial Conservative government.
