Codd Family

Robert Lionel Codd was born in Quebec in 1867 and came to B.C. in approximately 1889. His intention was to learn about the nursery business from his cousin George Henry, who was one of the first nurserymen in the province and had an established nursery in the Hatzic area. Robert purchased seven acres of land near Port Haney for the purpose of growing fruit. On this land, he was able to grow enough fruit to be the first person to ship a carload by railway, sending it to places as far away as Winnipeg.

Robert Codd married Sarah Bonis in 1901 and they had six children. The Codd family bought 160 acres on what was for a time called Codd Island. It was later known as Menzies Island, and is along the Alouette River in the Pitt Meadows region, between the North and South branches of the Alouette River.

The family left in 1915, but eventually returned to Maple Ridge and built a new home on River Road. During this time Robert became a book-keeper for several logging companies, was involved in the community and took an active role in the church. Sarah Codd was a school teacher in Port Hammond. Robert passed away in Maple Ridge in 1929.
