P002170 – Clappison Packers, in the 1950’s.

Clappison Packers

Jack and Bill Clappison arrived from Yorkshire in 1928, and before long, built a meat market on Ontario Street (224th), putting their knowledge of raising and butchering cattle to work. The heart of Haney was still downhill on the river front, so they were pioneers on the top of the hill in the days before the Lougheed Highway came through in 1931.

The gravel roads and wooden sidewalks brought a trickle of customers to the new store and boys on bicycles made home deliveries, but depression years made it necessary to carry the meat to a wider circle of customers. Three delivery trucks took roasts, chops and canned goods as far away as Stave Falls, Mission, and Pitt Meadows. Soon the store had to expand, employing 11 people at its peak.

In the 1940’s, when cash and carry grocery chains moved to Maple Ridge, the business changed. Jack Clappison went into the cold storage business, and Bill built Clappison Packers on River Road at the foot of Carr’s Hill, where he slaughtered cattle and sold meat wholesale.
