DeWolf Family

John DeWolf was born in Nova Scotia in 1854. He completed his education there, later moving to Vancouver where he spent some time working as a bookkeeper before moving out to Maple Ridge. He arrived in Haney in 1912 with his wife Elizabeth (nee Fuller), who was also from Nova Scotia. The couple purchased a five-acre farm and farmhouse. After Elizabeth died in 1933, he continued to live in the house well into his nineties, and it was then sold after his death in 1951.

John and Elizabeth's son Frank married Grace Woodley, with whom he had attended elementary school in Vancouver. They had three children, Phyllis in 1922, James ("Bud"), and Blossom. In 1923 Frank bought a store on the north-west corner of Callaghan and Ontario (224th) Street. The "Haney Cash Store", as it was known, was actually a grocery store. He remained in that location until the late 1940s when he moved up the hill in between the second telephone office and the Bank of Montreal. Shortly after, in the early 1950s, his son Bud took over operations of the store, and then sold it in the mid-1960s. Frank also ran another grocery store in Hammond beside Hansen's (on Dartford St., East side). This was the Hammond Cash Store. He operated this from about 1938-1946.

Frank was an expert archer, and in 1955 his skill helped to save lives. In November of that year the Alouette River flooded, stranding two women and several rescuers. Frank assisted in the rescue by shooting an arrow attached with fishing line through a small opening in the trees and across the water so that a secure life line could then be put in place.
