Kendrick Family
Robert Alexander Kendrick was born in 1861 in Simcoe County, Ontario. Agnes Kendrick (nee Baillie) was also born in Simcoe County, Ontario, in 1862. The two married in 1889, came to Haney somewhere between 1890 and 1893, and settled in Port Haney.
Robert Kendrick's daybook shows him to be a very adaptable person. He was competent in the management of livestock, had all the agricultural skills relevant to productive husbandry, including ploughing, planting and harvesting, and could also be seen churning butter. Robert wired the school board office when electricity first came to Port Haney and also went fishing on the Fraser River and sold his catch. In addition, Robert worked for a number of other landowners, usually as a hauler. If he worked with a team, he charged $3.00 per day.
On the ranch, Agnes was coping with a large family. The first of their children, Florence, was born in 1890, and was the eldest in a family of four girls and four boys. The children were: Florence, George, Helen, Edith, Janet, Edwin, Albert and Marshall.
Besides the chores of cooking and cleaning, Agnes was also making her children's clothing. All of the purchases made by the Kendrick family at Carr & Co. between 1898 and July 1901 are itemized and the list reveals the materials used to make all of this clothing. She must have visited the store herself for such items as a corset purchased on May 31st, 1900, and the sateen, gingham and elastic purchased on April 17th.
The frequency with which she required thread shows that she was fully engaged in needlework. Many items necessary for home sewing appear in the account book at Carr & Co., including tape, lining, pins and cotton. A major purchase of five yards of cashmere and lining took place on August 13th, 1900.
Edith Kendrick worked at the Haney Hotel and at the Charlton home, both run by Mrs. Morrison. The Charlton home was run as a boarding house for Western Power Co. workers. On February 11th, 1919, Edith married Marion Sim, who helped build the Bank of Montreal and some early homes. Their eldest son Roy died overseas in WWII and is buried in Holland, while their other son Walter, lived in New Westminster with his wife Mary and son Gordon.
On April 30th, 1939, Robert and Agnes celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the summer log cabin home of Mr. and Mrs. Sim (from Vancouver) on 29th Road in Haney. (29th Road is now 129th Ave.)
Robert died in 1950 at the age of 89. Agnes died the following year.
