Incorporation
On September 12th 1874, Maple Ridge was incorporated as a Municipality. Following the election of a Council on October 3rd, the Statutory Meeting of the First Municipal Council was held on Saturday October 10th 1874.
In the November 23rd 1922 edition of the Weekly Gazette Newspaper, Reeve J.A. McIver gives an extract from their first minute book:
The following are the Councillors elected at the first municipal election for the Corporation of the Township of Maple Ridge, held at the residence of John McIver, on the 3rd day of October, 1874: G. Howison, W. Harris, J. Bell, J. McKenney, Henry Dawson, Thomas Henderson, John Hammond. Signed, W.H. Barr, returning officer.
The municipality incorporated at the above date included the present municipality and extended one mile west of Pitt River and the Council comprised seven members.
The minutes of the meeting are also listed, along with the assessments of some property owners during that time.
Another newspaper article notes that "Councillor Wellington Harris was unanimously elected Warden of the Corporation of the Township of Maple Ridge, and J. Thorne was appointed Clerk."
At 3:00pm on September 12th 1974, Mayor Betty J. Dube and the Aldermen, led by a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Pipe Band, proceeded to an area at the Maple Ridge Golf Course where the first organizational meeting of the Council was held in 1874.
