Three young men from the Ridge in military uniform. From left to right, unidentified, Harry Cutler and Justin Anderson.
Cutler
John Cutler was a veterinary surgeon raised on a farm in England. He came to Hammond in 1907 and operated the meat market on Maple Crescent, ran a cattle farm, and sold beef to logging camps. He was fond of hunting and fishing.
John's children, Harry and his two sisters, were educated at the first Hammond school; a one-room building on the same site of the present Hammond School. John would have liked Harry to finish his education in England, but his mother preferred him to stay. In 1915, Harry was one of nine boys from Hammond who enlisted and went off to war. Harry was one of the three that came back.
