Whonnock
The community of Whonnock had a young Scot named Robert Robertson as its first European settler. With the coming of the CPR and a post office of its own, the community took the name of its First Nations people, variously spelled Warnock, Wharnok, Whonock, and Whonnock. To the Whonnock people, the name means "place of the hump-back salmon".
Over time, a railway station, school and churches were added with a substantial Norwegian settlement to add spice to a primarily British community. It became somewhat of a regional centre serving people in surrounding eastern Maple Ridge and Glen Valley across the river. In 1912, the Ladies Club built the first Whonnock Hall which provided a centre for social life that lasted many decades.
