Albion United Church
Samuel Robertson's house was the site of the first church services in Albion. As the population steadily grew, the Ladies Aid society set out to raise funds in order to have a building of their own.
The East Haney Presbyterian Church was built in 1910 on property owned by James Robertson on the southeast corner of what is now 240th Street and 102nd Avenue. The first local minister was Rev. George Findlay.
The church was also used as a community hall until the Albion Hall was built in 1923.
In 1925, the congregation joined the union and the church became Albion United Church.
The Gazette newspaper helped the church celebrate its 20th anniversary with an article in 1930. It noted that “arrangements are being made to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Albion United Church. This church was built in 1910 and opened in June of that year. The visiting preacher for that occasion was the Rev. George Pidgeon, D.D., then of Vancouver… the Sunday service will be held at 2:30pm and it is hoped that there will be a happy gathering of old timers as well as newer residents.”
The church closed down in the early 1930s and the property was sold.
In April of 1950, the Gazette reported that “Rev. H. T. Allen will officiate the reopening of the Albion Church, Sunday afternoon at 2:30pm. Visiting ministers will participate in the impressive rites of rededication and some former pastors have sent word they will be present. Many others have sent messages of congratulations and good wishes on the reopening of the Albion church.”
