Albion Ladies Club
The Albion Ladies Club was formed in 1941 as an offshoot of the Albion Community Hall Club. The club sponsored a variety of activities and helped to create and maintain a sense of community in Albion.
For instance, the Albion Ladies Club sponsored an amateur hour in 1951. “Fourteen contestants performed before a large audience at the amateur hour held in the Albion Community Hall,” wrote the Gazette. “First prize was awarded to Dale Erskine, violinist; 2nd prize, June Malm, vocal soloist; 3rd prize to Irving Labree, cowboy singer… Pianist for the contestants was Marlene Hill. Councilor Peter Jenewein was master of ceremonies.”
Likewise, in 1952 the Gazette noted that “the Albion community hall was filled to capacity on Friday evening, December 19 when children in the community presented their annual Christmas concert… sponsored by the Albion Ladies Club… Following the concert gifts were received from Santa Claus, who unloaded two large trees which decorated the stage. The children were all treated to bags of nuts and candies, and were also served refreshments.”
In 1953, the Gazette reported that at the club’s annual meeting, Mrs. E. Thomas was elected the president of the Albion Ladies Club. Mrs. H. Hill was elected vice president, while Mrs. F. Zeron was secretary-treasure. It was noted that “reports showed that a very successful year has been enjoyed by the club with much work accomplished.”
In 1963, the club celebrated the hall’s 40th anniversary with their annual meeting and a pot luck supper. Activities during the evening included “an appropriately decorated cake which was cut by Miss Jo-Anne Baker and W. Lahti. Mr. R. Holland, one of the original community member who helped form the association in 1923 gave an address on how the Albion Community Club was formed… the tables were beautifully decorated, each table being decorated in a theme suited to the month.”
The club did significant fundraising for the community and the hall. During their 1968 annual meeting, it was noted that “the president congratulated members on the many fulfillments that they had made possible in the past year. Among these achievements were the $1000 piano that was purchased, renovations of the men’s room, and repair of the roof. Members were also instrumental in the procuring of signal lights at 17th Avenue.” [We assume this refers to the intersection of 240th and Lougheed Highway.]
We haven’t a single photo reflecting this group or its activities in our community archives and would greatly appreciate the loan or donation of such images.
