Teacher's Corner

The Social Studies curriculum provides students with opportunities to reflect critically upon events and issues in order to examine the present, make connections with the past, and consider the future. The Maple Ridge Museum is a great way to introduce aspects of local history, development, and community into your classroom.

Throughout their participation in Social Studies, students will be encouraged and enabled to acquire an understanding of and appreciation for the historical and geographical forces that have shaped, and continue to shape, Canadian society and the societies of countries around the world.

Bringing outside resource people into your classroom is an effective way of reinforcing content, emphasizing and practicing listening skills, exposing students to different points of view, providing opportunities for discussion and debate, providing a departure point for writing, and making learning more concrete and relevant.

By coming in for a tour with your class or inviting a guest speaker into your school, the students are able to make connections between what they are learning and the community they are living in.
